Soft Landing is a social enterprise initiative of Mission Australia, operating from their Bellambi and Smithfield facilities, to divert waste mattresses from landfill and recover the components for reuse. Soft Landing has developed closed-loop material recovery for all mattress components and offers employment opportunities for people who experience barriers entering the open labour market. Their efforts were recognised in 2012 when they were announced winners of the Green Globe – Regional Sustainability Award.
Following delivery of the Resource Efficiency Module, an integral component of the Office of Environment & Heritage Sustainability Advantage Program, Rana Environmental has now commenced the development of an Environmental Management System (EMS) for the Soft Landing operation, consistent with ISO 14001. This International Standard, based upon the methodology of Plan-Do-Check-Act, specifies requirements for an organisation to develop and implement a policy, and objectives that take into account legal requirements and information about environmental aspects.
Development of the EMS is designed to facilitate continual improvement in environmental management and enhance the organisation’s competitive advantage.
It also acts to demonstrate the organisations commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient and environmentally conscious work environment for its staff and contractors.
